Access new tricks and functions by jailbreaking your iPhone

While iOS 7 fulfils the day-to-day requirements of most people, there is a community of users who look to further enhance the experience by jailbreaking.

This involves unlocking the iOS operating system – a simple process, which then grants you access to the Cydia app store. From here you can download apps that perform functions not normally possible within iOS. Examples include adding a newsfeed to your Lock screen or using face recognition to unlock your device. Jailbreaking your iPhone is as simple as connecting your handset to a computer. Over the next few steps we’ll look at the process of obtaining what is known as an un-tethered jailbreak. It’s recommended that you back up your iPhone beforehand, either via iCloud or iTunes. At the time of writing, jailbreaking can only be done on handsets with an installed iOS version earlier than 7.1. If you previously upgraded to iOS 7 via an over-the-air update (as opposed to via iTunes), there is also a good chance that the jailbreak will not take effect. If this is the case, sadly you won’t be able to jailbreak your device.

1: Download Evasi0n
Go to http://evasi0n.com in a desktop web browser. Select the download link for your operating system. Be sure to check the ‘Read Me’ section lower down the webpage.

2: Prepare your device

It’s good practice to charge your iPhone before performing a jailbreak. You’ll also need to disable the pass lock via Settings>Touch ID & Pass code for the jailbreak to work.

3: Back up with iTunes

Open iTunes on your computer; update it but don’t update the iPhone itself. Connect your iPhone and create a backup. If something goes wrong, at least your data will be safe.

4: Start jailbreaking

Once you’re backed up, disconnect your iPhone and close iTunes. Open Evasi0n and connect your device again. Evasi0n will then confirm whether it can be jailbroken.

5: The jailbreak process

Click on Jailbreak to start the process. It can take a while and involves a few prompts and reboots during the process. Do not reopen iTunes at this stage.

6: Cydia app installed

Once finished, the phone will reboot and Evasi0n will display an exit prompt. A Cydia icon will appear on your Home screen once everything has been finalized.
